For Jews across German-controlled Poland, that “New Order” held a bleak future. As a survivor from Przemyśl stated, “There was not one day in which there were not shootings or people were not severely mistreated.”76

To the invaders, the setting looked entirely different. Among the topics of photographs taken by Einsatzgruppen members deployed behind the front line was the “strangeness” encountered in Poland, often epitomized by images of Jews dressed in traditional attire, combined with the Germans “bringing order” to the newly occupied territories. We can only speculate about the motives of the photographers and album owners; it is fair to assume, however, that they saw their wartime activities as a source of pride and considered their memories worth sharing with their circles back in Germany.77 Of the many photographic images produced by Sipo/SD men in Poland, only a few have survived.78 Among them is the photo album compiled by Hermann Baltruschat, who was a member of EK 3/V. The first pages of this album illustrate the anti-Jewish measures taken by this Einsatzgruppe in the Ciechanów (German: Zichenau) region of northern Poland in late September 1939. They complement what the unit reported to Berlin headquarters.79
